About Mark Sweeney

Professional Background
Mark O. Sweeney is a Senior Vice President at Cornish & Carey Commercial Newmark Knight Frank’s Pleasanton office. He has 30 years of commercial real estate experience and specializes in the land use/entitlement process. Prior to joining Cornish & Carey, Mark was a Principal at CM Realty.

Some of his notable transactions include working with RREEF to rezone an approximately 18.5 acre industrial property and assist with the entitlements and sale to KB Home. He also worked with Ponderosa Homes, the City of Pleasanton, and various stakeholder groups to successfully entitle a 92 acre mixed use development of the Busch Property including more than 500 dwelling units, a 172 unit senior citizen affordable housing project, and a 6 acre church.

In 1987, Mark founded Hacienda Marketing & Sales Corporation to market the remaining undeveloped land in Hacienda Business Park on behalf of The Prudential Insurance Company of America. He finalized negotiations with the City of Pleasanton for a General Plan Amendment and rezoning of 105 acres of office land for residential uses; successfully renegotiated Prudential’s Development Agreement with the City of Pleasanton to cap future obligations, allow flexible land uses on the remaining Hacienda land (including public and institutional, and retail uses), and require the City to reserve sufficient traffic and sewer capacity from its dwindling supply to complete the build-out of Hacienda; and effectively processed numerous complex development projects through public approvals in Pleasanton. These efforts resulted in the sale of 430 acres of land over 13 years to such diverse clients as BART, Boehringer Mannheim, Signature Properties, Security Capital Pacific Trust, Shaklee Corporation, and PeopleSoft.

At Sammis Development Company, Mark worked on the acquisition, leasing and sale of land, office buildings, and shopping centers where he helped develop successful projects in Pleasanton (Cross Roads Office / Retail Complex) and in San Jose (Westgate Mall). He was Sales Manager and Partner at CPS Commercial Brokerage where he worked to lease and sell approximately two Million SF of office/R&D and retail projects in the Tri-Valley market. Mark was also Leasing and Sales Specialist at Coldwell Banker Commercial Real Estate Services where he worked exclusively on shopping center leasing and sales and worked with Safeway Stores on the development of 55 Liquor Barns in California.

Education
Mark earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics from San Diego State University. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Hacienda Business Park Owners Association and the Tri-Valley Business Council, and he is a Director of the Hacienda Child Development Fund, a charitable foundation that benefits Tri-Valley youth activities. He is also a past recipient of the Pleasanton Mayor’s Award.
