The History of Encore

Encore Theatrical Supply Co. was started in 1958 by Eleanor Gruidl, a talented costumer, and was first located near Mills College in Oakland. Eleanor later moved the store to San Leandro, then Castro Valley, and finally to Pleasanton.

In 1986 Eleanor retired, and the business was purchased by Ed and Merry Margolin. Since then, Encore has expanded to a larger store in Pleasanton and opened our branch store in Walnut Creek in Ygnacio Plaza.

Encore continues to supply dancer's apparel, costumes, theatrical supplies, and costume rentals to customers in the San Francisco East Bay, and beyond.

About the Owners

Ed and Merry Margolin have a long history in the theatrical supply business.

Ed has worked in family businesses including Dance Art Co., a fixture in the theatrical supply business in San Francisco for many years, A & L Theatrical which was located in Oakland, and Larry's Theatrical in San Jose. In addition to his experience in retail, Ed is a professional musician. Ed holds degrees in Merchandising and Broadcast Communications.

Ed met Merry Avery at Dance Art Co., in 1963. Merry was a professional ballet dancer and teacher at the time, as well as working in the dance supply field. Merry later gained experience in accounting with major department store chains, and insurance companies.

Tami Margolin, Ed and Merry's daughter, is the General Manager and Head Buyer of Encore. Besides growing up around the Theatrical Supply business, Tami had been involved in acting and dance for many years.

Ed, Merry, and Tami Margolin are devoted to the idea of providing the best in dance and         theatrical supplies on the market, together with excellent service to our valued customers     in the Bay Area and beyond.
