We are a group of puppy raisers from the Pleasanton, Livermore, Dublin, Castro Valley, San Ramon, Danville and Fremont California areas that train, socialize, and care for special puppies so that they can someday become Guide Dogs for the Blind.
We have welcomed many new people into our club to learn about Guide Dogs and how to train and care for these important pups. The puppies learn how to behave in different situations and they learn a variety of commands (12 actually) such as "SIT", "STAY", "COME", "LETS GO", and "DO YOUR BUSINESS". They must obey all of these commands in order to become a Guide Dog.
Our puppies go to one meeting every week (typically Tuesday nights) so the raisers can get tips on how to raise their pups and so the dogs can learn new commands and become socialized with the other pups and raisers. Beside raising a puppy members can also be puppy sitters. Puppy sitters provide support when a program dog puppy raiser's go on vacation.
Every August, our group hosts the Pleasanton Pooch Parade, held in conjunction with the Downtown Pleasanton Association's First Wednesday Street Faire. This is a great time for dog lovers from the Tri-Valley area and beyond to dress up their favorite pooch (and the pooch's master!) and join us in a parade through historic downtown Pleasanton. This has become quite a spectacular event, growing better each year. Next year's parade will be on Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011!
